Sony’s Cyber-shot DSC-S800 point-and-shoot sports 6x optical zoom

While it may be getting tougher to not only smuggle a decent digicam into a decent concert, but to get even remotely close to the action, it’s good to see a few camera manufacturers cranking up the optical zooming abilities of their point-and-shoots. Sony’s latest Cyber-shot DSC-S800 proudly joins the currently-lacking clan, and features an 8.1-megapixel Super HAD CCD, ISO rating up to 1250, metallic frame (backside snapped after the break), 2.5-inch LCD monitor, Direct Playback mode, 54MB of internal memory, MSPro / MSDuo compatibility, and the reported ability to handle 390 shots before calling it quits. Moreover, users can enjoy the two-centimeter macro mode, 16:9 playback, PictBridge support, and variety of on-screen language choices, but the Motion JPEG video mode isn’t apt to cause any gleeful celebrations. Of course, any Americans who were already working their credit card out of the wallet can stop right there, as this sucka won’t be available until May at the earliest, and only to Europeans (at least initially) at that.

Archos 404 PMP Camcorder & Still Cam

April 24th, 2007 admin Posted in Digital Cameras No Comments »

archos404camcorderi.jpg

Archos has a cool PMP device that masquerades as a camcorder called the Archos 404 cam which LAPTOP Magazine recently reviewed. This slick looking device sports a 3.5” screen and a 1.3 megapixel camcorder for shooting full motion video and still shots. The total weight of the device is a mere 6.8 ounces and the screen is large enough for 320 x 240 pixel videos to be played, which is one of the most common resolutions online for video viewing.

The screen also provides 16 million colors. The 404 connects directly to your PC via proprietary USB connector on the bottom of the machine, so you won’t be buying aftermarket cables for this thing. The battery was good for about three hours of shooting in LAPTOP Magazine tests. Internal storage for the 404 is a 30GB HDD and the device can be used as a DVR with an optional DVR dock.

Samsung L700 Camera

samsung-l700-camera.jpg

The latest offering from Samsung, the L700 digital camera is a 7 megapixel camera with 5 x optical zoom. It comes with a 2.3 inch LCD and ISO sensitivity of up to 1600 which is pretty impressive. It supports memory cards such as SD and SDHC to complement its paltry internal memory of 20 mb.

As most digital cameras, it captures video in 640 x 480 at 30 fps. It is a compact camera with no real weak points apart from its poor low light focusing and over exposure under bright light. It is a good investment for both beginners and amateurs alike. The picture quality is reasonably good. Although its style is not as stylish and elegant as the latest Samsung models, it does perform exceptionally well for its category. It will be a camera that I will highly recommend for buyers who are interested. No price announcements are available but it will definitely be a great buy.
