World’s first Penryn ultra-portable : Fujitsu’s 12.1-inch LOOX R

That unassuming little 12.1-inch laptop is Fujitsu’s LOOX R ultra-portable. It weighs in at 1.27-kg (2.8-pounds) with an LED backlit 1,280 x 800 display, up to 4GB or memory and 120GB of disk, dual-layer DVD writer, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11 a/b/g WiFi, SDHC slot, Firewire, fingerprint sensor, PCMCIA, and more.

Lots to like already. Now this: a standard battery running for 9.7-hours with the help of a purposely unspecified Intel processor. With an expected January ship, is it any wonder we’re speculating that this is the world’s first laptop to run a mobile version of Intel’s new Penryn CPU rumored for release on January 6th? The first of many we’ll see launch in the new year.

A world’s first HD DVD-RW drive in a laptop

Notice anything special about that laptop up there? No besides it’s monstrous footprint. Right, a world’s first HD DVD-RW drive in a laptop. Otherwise, it’s the same 17-inch WUXGA (1920 x 1200) Qosmio G40 we know and love now topping out with a 2.2GHz T7500 Core 2 Duo, up to 400GB of disk and 4GB of memory, and a pair of terrestrial HDTV tuners with HDMI-out in a 10.6-pound slab of media action. Priced at about ¥400,000 ($3,530) nicely equipped.

Toshiba’s Satellite T31 arrives with Vista

Tired of fretting about which flavor of Windows will work best for you? Toshiba’s apparently feeling your pain, and is looking to remedy said quandary by tossing in both operating systems with its new 15.4-inch Dynabook Satellite T31. Apparently, the unit includes Vista Business and XP Professional recovery discs, giving the buyer the option when they finally get it home. Specs wise, you’ll be looking at a 2GHz Core 2 Duo T7250 on the high side (with a 1.86GHz Celeron 540 on the low-end), as well as optional WiFi, a WXGA (1,280 x 800) resolution panel, 512MB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, DVD burner and a rechargeable Li-ion good for around 1.3 hours. Additionally, the unit touts four USB 2.0 sockets, Ethernet, PCMCIA, a multicard reader, VGA / S-Video outputs and a FireWire port to boot. Check it out right now for between ¥175,350 ($1,573) and ¥206,850 ($1,856).

Sharp’s LC-32GP3U gamer centric LCD

Sharp was liberal with the specs this morning on its new LC-32GP3U gamer-centric LCD, but left out the press shots — our favorite part. All is mended now, and while the design isn’t particularly stunning, we remain wholeheartedly in support of the hardware on this 32-inch 1080p set. More shots after the break.

HTC Shift slightly delayed

HTC Shift slightly delayed

HTC hasn’t been terribly forthcoming about this, since its “official” launch date for the Shift — at least in Europe — was November. but we gave them a ring today and they say the UMPC should be shipping in Europe and Asia in about a week, and Stateside in about a month. Nice and vague, just like we like ‘em. And sticking with that “shifting” motif, Dynamism currently has the pre-order price for a Shift import pegged at $1599, a whole $99 more than it read in August.
