New Qosmio called the G55 LAPTOP says is on sale next month for $1,550

Looks like Toshiba’s not too far out from a new Qosmio called the G55, which LAPTOP says is on sale next month for $1,550. Listed among the specs are an 18.4-inch (1680 x 945) display, Centrino 2 CPU, GeForce 9600M GT, 4GB of RAM, dual drives, and the “Quad Core HD processor” (probably the commercial name for the Cell-based SpursEngine), which powers many of the media functions, including its camera-based visual gesture control system. LAPTOP calls the gesture system groundbreaking, but we’re clearly two sides to the same coin: the demo they gave looks cumbersome, inaccurate, and incredibly frustrating. And besides the fact that it requires “steady hands” and “can’t be used by people with wrist problems,” even if the gesture controls were well done, holding your arm in the air for minutes at a time is nowhere near a practical for regular use. Is it sad that we still kind of want it, though?

keystrokes ideally launched the Glass keyboard fully waterproof

While we can’t say it’s our notion of an ideal keyboard, we’ve still got to admire designer Kong Fanwen’s ability to throw any sense of practicality to the wind and ditch the whole idea of keys with his new “No-key Keyboard” concept. In the place of that tried and true typing mechanism, this keyboard would instead make use of a camera and the “latest motion capture technology” to watch your fingers’ movement and capture all the right keystrokes (ideally). On the upside, that’d apparently make the keyboard fully waterproof, and it’d apparently come with some snazzy lighting options to help you find those non-existent keys in the dark.

Stealth Computer ships rugged 24-inch LCD monitor for $2,000

While most rugged PCs are of the laptop or tablet variety these days, those wanting to lug around a bigger, more capable system now have new component to add to their rig courtesy of Stealth Computer, which has just trotted out what it claims to be the industry’s first rugged 24-inch LCD monitor with a touchscreen interface. That ruggedness comes courtesy of an all-steel enclosure, which promises to keep the LCD safe from water, dust and dirt, although Stealth doesn’t seem to be making any promises about drops. Otherwise, you can expect the usual 1920 x 1200 resolution, along with a 1,000:1 contrast ratio, 5 ms response time, DVI and VGA ports, an optional anti-reflective overlay, and even an optional capacitive touchscreen sensor. All of that comes at an expectedly hefty price, however, with the SV-2400 setting you back between $2,000 and $2,500 depending on the configuration.

ASUS Eee PC desktop

We’ve all been waiting to see what ASUS’s Eee PC desktop would turn out to look like, and HotHardware is claiming these shots are the real deal. Yeah, we know, it’s a bit reminiscent of a certain motion-sensing game console, but besides these kind of grainy photos we’ve still got almost nothing to go by. Yet!

Dell soon-to-be-announced Latitude E-series machines

We’ve got a bit of preliminary dirt on Dell’s new, soon-to-be-announced Latitude E-series machines, and we’re liking what we see. So far we know there will be a 4.25 pound / 14.1-inch and 5 pound / 15.4-inch version, both with WXGA and WXGA+ LED backlit displays, as well as a 12-inch (pictured above) and 13.3-inch version for road warrior types. Expect DisplayPort, eSATA, plenty of USB ports, and PC or ExpressCard slots in the larger models. More on these as we get it in.
