2008 Dodge Viper SRT10

With the new 600-horsepower 2008 Dodge Vipers starting to hit the streets, it was only a matter of time before someone put one on a dyno to see what kind of juice the snakes are sending to the rear wheels. That someone, in this case, is longtime Viper tuner Hennessey, and their new car made 546 horses and 516 lb-ft of torque in stock trim. According to DragTimes, if you factor in a 13% drivetrain loss, the new Viper is actually making around 615 horses. Not shabby, to say the least. Hennessey dynoed the car a second time after making some exhaust mods and was able to raise those numbers to 574.95 rwhp and 537 lb-ft. Head over to DragTimes to see the graph. We’ll take one in green, please.

The 2008 Cadillac STS the overall cost near $20,000 per year

The 2008 Cadillac STS the overall cost near $20,000 per year

We’ve all seen the ads in the newspaper or in commercials that say you can get a new car with zero money down and only $299 per month. Quick math tells you that even after taxes and destination, you’re only paying about $4,400 the first year to own a brand new car. A recent study by consulting firm Runzheimer International shows that a new car will cost you considerably more in overall operating costs. At 15,000 miles per year, the cost of insurance, gasoline, fees, depreciation, and maintenance can drive the overall cost near $20,000 per year.

The 2008 Cadillac STS was tops in this year’s test, costing buyers $19,537. The Lexus LS460 was close behind at $19,372. Big vehicles cost quite a bit also, with Ford’s E-350 XL SuperDuty tallying a $16,543 bill followed by the Chevy Tahoe LS 4×4 at $15,789. There were some relatively low cost vehicles as well, with the first year costs of a Toyota Corolla CE coming in lowest in the test at $7,933 and a Ford Ranger XL pickup that hits $9,929. If these numbers seem high, it’s because the highest liability in a new car balance sheet is depreciation, and new cars can lose thousands the day they’re driven off the lot. Every mile on the odometer brings the resale value lower, and if your new car carried lots of incentives or it’s a rental car favorite, its residual plummets even further.

HUMMER HX Concept

HUMMER HX Concept

Talk about a dream job. David Rojas, Min Young Kang and Robert Jablonski are three fresh-faced grads of the College for Creative Studies (where many car designers get their schoolin’) and recent new-hires of the GM Design division. Their first assignment handed down from on high was this: “provide a vision for the future design of off-road vehicles.” Under the supervision of HUMMER design studio director Carl Zipfel, each young designer was assigned to either the wheelbase, approach and departure angles or stance - three core HUMMER proportions – and otherwise given liberty to design away. Though all three came up with their own visions, the won you see above was chosen by the suits to be transformed into an actual concept to be shown at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show.

The press release states that the E85 Flex Fuel-capable HX Concept features a pair of removable roof panels, as well as a removable rear roof. The end effect is some serious open air motoring while you’re crawling boulders or jumping dunes. The slant back either recalls that particular body style of the original HUMMER H1, or like us you’re seeing a lot of the Toyota FJ Cruiser in the shape, too (especially from this angle). The doors and fenders can also be removed for off-roading adventures, though it’s not like this concept will ever touch a speck of topsoil.

Detroit 2008 Preview

We’ll be seeing a wide array of vehicles from General Motors at the Detroit Auto Show less than a month from now. According to Bob Lutz, the lineup will include at least the ZR1 ‘Vette, the CTS-V, Saturn Flextreme, and Two-Mode Saturn Vues in regular and plug-in variants. AutoCar is also reporting that a concept version of Saab’s new crossover, the 9-4X, will turn up at Cobo Hall. The 9-4X is expected to share a variation of GM’s Theta compact CUV architecture with the new Cadillac BRX and be built in Mexico alongside the Saturn Vue. Perhaps more interesting to true Saab aficionados will be the arrival of a new 9-1 model at the London Motor Show next July. This one will come off the next generation Delta platform along with the Astra and be as close as Trollhatten ever again gets to a “true” Saab.

“Fastlane” Future Car

“Fastlane” Future Car

Now here’s a Fiero bodykit that’s worthwhile. TransFX, a California-based custom car maker responsible for several GM concepts as well as lots and lots of Batman’s cars, boats, and planes, built four of these bodies for a Universal Studios project. Designed to be mounted on a stretched Fiero chassis, only a single roadgoing version exists, and the Volo Auto Museum will sell that to you for $65,000. You could spend less than one third that price and pick up this body shell, allowing you to then dream up your own undercarriage. We think it’d be good with a Porsche Boxster plugged in underneath.

What you get for $14,000 is a very cool futuristic bodyshell on casters. The outside might look an awful lot like a car, but climbing underneath tells the whole story. There’s nothing to this car, yet. Its just waiting for you to marry your chassis to its bodywork. Then you’ll have the task of creating the entire wiring harness, installing all the lights, the interior, and about a quintillion little issues that always crop up with kit cars, which this essentially is. What we want to know is what ever became of the project these props were commissioned for. We also hope that whoever wins the auction at least uses a Fiero GT as a donor. It just wouldn’t do to put this car on a 2M4. The Iron Duke is definitely not an engine befitting Batman. Then again, the GT’s 2.8 is merely suited to Boy Wonder. Now, a Northstar starts to show promise. Hmm.
