RIM Releases BlackBerry Messenger 5.0

Research in Motion has released a new BlackBerry Messenger client that adds group chat, photo sharing, avatars and the ability to add new contacts by taking a picture of a “barcode” displayed on another BlackBerry device’s screen.

The Waterloo, Ontaria-based company said the new software, a BlackBerry-to-BlackBerry instant messaging client routed through RIM’s servers, now lets users transfer photos, songs or videos up to 6MB in size.

The new update also allows owners to send messages, notes, voice messages, calendars and photos to several BlackBerry devices at once.

Users can add new contacts through email, name or “barcode scanning” — where one device displays a barcode for another to read by taking a picture.

RIM said BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 is available for free from the BlackBerry App World or its Web site.
