Nissan GT-R Unveiled
Since the first hint of an American production of the Nissan Skyline GT-R, car enthusiasts across the nation have been anxiously waiting to see if the rumors were true. They hype generated from this car comes from the heritage it is expected to live up to.
The first release of the Skyline GT-R was back in 1969, sporting a 160 horse-power inline-6 and a 5-speed transmission. It wasn’t till 1990 that the Skyline GT-R became the legend it is today. It was one of 3 models released with a twin-turbo, all-wheel-drive power train. The last and most sought after of these was the R34 model, which left production in 2003. It was also the vehicle that set the bar for anything new bearing the Skyline badge.
Skip ahead to 2005 at the Tokyo Motor Show where a GT-R show-car, called the GT-R Proto, was being lavished with attention. It has also been spotted running laps on the famed Nürburgring test track in Germany and cruising the streets of Los Angeles. It can also be noted that many times, the presence of a Porsche 911 Turbo accompanied the GT-R. Apparently this is the benchmark that Nissan is using to tweak their new baby.
 In 2006, the news was finally delivered to the waiting Americans, the GT-R would be available in the US, but only through Nissan. It will come with a 473hp twin-turbo V6 routed through a twin-clutch 6-speed automatic transmission controlled by paddles on the steering wheel. It will shoot to 60 mph in about 3.5 seconds and can run the quarter mile in 11.7 seconds, numbers which are oddly similar to the Porsche 911 Turbo.
If that isn’t enough power for you, Nissan already has the solution. They have officially announced the production of a Spec-V GT-R for the 2010 model year. It will be lighter at 3600lbs and Nissan plans to add another 60 horsepower to the already potent motor.
Delivery to the US is set to start in early 2008 and with a price tag of between $65,000 and $70,000 it may very well leave the Corvette Z06 in the dust when it comes to the best sports car for the price. The price for the Spec-V is still unknown. The only thing that Nissan has guaranteed is that the new GT-R will have no problem living up the Skyline name.
