100 millionth Symbian smartphone ships”

Wednesday, January 24th, 2007

Break out the bubbly, it’s party time! If you’re a little software outfit by the name of Symbian, that is — or Nokia, Sony Ericsson, or any other of Symbian’s ten active licensees. The British company has announced that the 100 millionth phone running its goodies has shipped, 36 million of which have come in 2006 alone. If we were the betting type, we’d put our money on that 100 millionth handset being a Nokia piece seeing how their particular flavor of Symbian — S60 — accounts for an overwhelming majority of Symbian-powered devices finding their way into consumers’ hands, but as we’ve seen, Sony Ericsson isn’t about to give up on UIQ. Either way, Symbian’s celebrating the occasion with their “Because of the Code” contest, which’ll award 100 smartphones and other miscellaneous parting gifts to the best code samples submitted by January 7; meanwhile, non-developers can get in on the fun with the “Symbian Hundred Million Phones” quiz, offering handsets to another three folks randomly selected from the pool of those answering all the questions correctly. Here’s to another 100 million, Symbian!

Nokia E50 reemerges in “Metal Black”

First it got small; now, it’s getting chic. Nokia’s most diminutive smartphone, the E50 candybar, is being re-released in fabulous “Metal Black” (read: black) toward the tail end of this quickly waning year. As a refresher, the business-oriented E50 does quad-band GSM plus EDGE, a 320 x 240 display, 1.3 megapixel cam, and microSD expansion all sitting atop S60 3rd Edition. Sadly, it looks like the Metal Black version will only be seeing a limited release in “select markets,” but we reckon importers wouldn’t last very long in this business if they couldn’t figure out how to get a few stateside.

Sony Ericsson’s beastly W44S for KDDI au

A lot of phones, pictures of phones, and mockups of phones grace our desks in an average week; some leave more of an impression on us than others. Looking at pictures of this W44S from Sony Ericsson left us forever marked with deep feelings of fear, awe, respect, and a genuine hope that we might one day see such immaculate pieces of equipment in our own lands. We’re not sure we can put our finger on what did it for us. Was it the glossy exterior, available in your choice of black, silver, or green? The gorgeous, Bravia-branded display? The beefy dual hinge? The digital radio and TV tuners? Seeing how we’ll likely never have an opportunity to run our hands across this beauty’s softly-sculpted lines, we may never know for sure — but customer’s of Japan’s KDDI au can find out when the W44S drops next month.

Nokia prepping N97 “multimedia computer”?

Monday, January 8th, 2007
nokia-n97-rumor.jpg

As much as we love to give Nokia crap for calling these S60 smartphones of theirs “multimedia computers,” it’s getting harder and harder to argue with the moniker. The purported specs on Nokia’s upcoming N97, supposedly pictured above, include a 20GB HDD, “3D stereo speakers,” 3.2 megapixel camera with flash and 2.4x optical zoom, 15fps video recording, a 3-inch screen, FM radio, miniSD, 400+ hour standby time, 4+ hour talk time and 24+ hour music playback. There’s no real confirmation of all this, and the original source is in Hungarian — always a shady sign — but the truth is that it’s really going to take specs like this to even register interest in light of its predecessor, the crazy-decked N95.
